Security is playing an increasingly important role within care institutions. An example of this is the NEN 7510 standard for information security in the Dutch health sector, which outlines how networks within care institutions must be secured. In addition to external networks, this also applies to internal networks in particular, where people have to log onto their PCs (more quickly).

The Dutch Central Information Unit on Health Care Professions (CBIG), an agency of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, has created the UZI register and accompanying UZI-card, or the professionalisation and acceleration of this process.

Card management system
All of these measures involve considerable red tape and mean that many different cards are required.
